Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Entrepreneurial development plays a pivotal role in stimulating local economies, creating jobs, and fostering innovation, especially in emerging economies like Nigeria. In Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State, entrepreneurship has the potential to alleviate unemployment and drive regional growth, yet challenges such as inadequate access to finance, lack of entrepreneurial skills, and limited market exposure persist. Local newspapers, through regular coverage, can serve as platforms for entrepreneurial education, networking, and advocacy, thereby playing an essential role in fostering an entrepreneurial culture (Sadiq & Bello, 2023). Print media outlets, including newspapers, feature success stories of local entrepreneurs, provide information on business opportunities, government policies, and available financial resources. By highlighting these aspects, local newspapers can significantly influence the development of entrepreneurship in the community, encouraging individuals to take the leap into business ownership. This study investigates the impact of local newspaper coverage on entrepreneurial development in Jalingo, with a focus on how effectively these media outlets promote entrepreneurship, the challenges they face, and their role in stimulating local business growth.

The level of public engagement with these media, especially in rural areas, and the effectiveness of the content in fostering entrepreneurial action are questions that need further exploration. Additionally, the reach and influence of local newspapers may be constrained by factors such as low literacy rates, limited newspaper circulation, and competition from digital media.
